Haiti death toll rises

Emergency management officials in Haiti say the death toll from heavy rains has risen to 13.

The head of emergency management Alta Jean- Baptiste said some 2,000 families had been left homeless by the downpours, which battered the country for nearly two weeks.

Neighbouring Dominican Republic was also affected – at least three people were killed and over 4,000 were left homeless.

Severe thunderstorms and strong winds have been affecting the northern Caribbean, due to tropical systems that developed in the area.

Liat Operations
back to normal

Operations have returned to normal at regional carrier Liat, after Friday’s industrial action by pilots forced the cancellation of several flights.

On Friday the airline obtained a court injunction preventing its pilots from continuing protest action.

A three-member panel issued the order after several pilots reported sick for duty.

It said the order would remain in force “until the determination of current negotiations” between the two parties “or until further order of this Court”.
