Beekeeper still unconscious

Christopher Phillips, the apiculturist who fell from a ladder at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), has been unconscious since Saturday evening.

The 50-year-old man of 24 Coverden, East Bank Demerara was dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) shortly after 10 pm last Thursday and was immediately rushed to theatre for surgery. Phillips had been admitted to the High Dependency Unit that night. However, his condition subsequently worsened and he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit where he remained in a serious condition last evening. Sources have indicated that Phillips’ condition “is not promising”.

In a press statement issued last Friday the airport said that Phillips was removing a bees’ nest from an unoccupied hangar at approximately 6.50 pm Thursday when he fell from the ladder sustaining injuries to his head and limbs. Sources have indicated that Phillips broke both legs.

The man, CJIA had said, was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and later rushed to GPH. Senior Airport Management officials, according to the release, have met with Phillip’s relatives and are “providing support to the family”. The matter has been reported to the Ministry of Labour and an investigation has been launched.
