Prison officer found guilty of taking ganja into prison

A former prison officer who was attached to the New Amsterdam penitentiary, and is now an inmate there, was found guilty by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Persid Edmond of trafficking in narcotics and introducing narcotics into the prison.

Sentencing was deferred to June 8, pending the appearance of his lawyer Charrandass Persaud who is currently out of the jurisdiction.

Evidence revealed that Glen Lewis had been in the prison service for a mere six months when his superiors observed him acting suspiciously. On December 7, 2006, searches conducted on his person revealed packets of marijuana strapped to his torso.
The police said intelligence revealed that the packets were destined for the female dormitory of the detention centre.

Lewis, who was granted $150,000 bail during the trial was remanded to prison on Monday, after informing the court the he wished that his lawyer be  present, prior to the imposing of the sentence.
