Man shot on Laing Avenue

A 28-year-old man was shot in his left thigh at Laing Avenue last evening and was receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) up to press time.

Kester Gritten of Alexander Village was on Laing Avenue when the incident occurred at about 8 pm. It was not immediately clear how the incident occurred and Gritten disappeared afterwards. He later arrived at the GPH at around 9:20 pm. No relatives were present at the hospital, when this newspaper visited.

Stabroek News was told that it is believed that the shooter was someone who Gritten had an altercation with earlier this week. This newspaper was told that earlier this week Gritten was gambling with a group of men, and someone picked up his money. Upon discovering this, he picked up a bottle, broke it and advanced towards the person, whom he suspected took the money.

However, another gambler pulled a gun, aimed it at him and pulled the trigger. However, the gun did not fire and Gritten reportedly attacked the man and stabbed him. The man threatened him and said that he would “come back” to him.

Police went to the location where the incident occurred and reportedly retrieved some spent shells. Investigations are continuing.
