Bandits shoot businessman with his own gun

A 45-year-old businessman who was attacked and shot by bandits with his own gun was last evening being treated at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

Daewan Roshan, owner of Roshan’s Variety Store at Lot 72 Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara was in his store when three men purporting to be customers forced their way in and began demanding cash.

His nephew Deo Prakash, with whom Stabroek News spoke, said he was not with his uncle at the time, and as such could not say exactly how the men had succeeded in making their way behind the counter.

However, Prakash said, according to reports he had received, the robbery which occurred between 6:30 pm and 7 pm saw the bandits using his uncle’s licensed firearm to shoot him.

“When I got to the hospital the neighbours who brought my uncle here said that he had told them that the robbers did not enter the shop with guns, but used his firearm instead,” Prakash explained.

The nephew added also that when searches were launched to recover the weapon, it was missing.
This newspaper was told that Roshan’s mother was at home, which is above the store, at the time of the incident and though she was not injured, she was immensely traumatized.

It was not clear on which part of his body Roshan sustained the bullet wound or what apart from the weapon, the bandits had taken from his store.
