Ok, this is it! Minister of Sports Dr. Frank Anthony explains to Stabroek Sports reporter Rawle Toney the purpose of the Sports Resource Centre.

According to Minister of Sports Dr. Frank Anthony, the centre was put together at a cost of $1.6 million and it is just the beginning of what his ministry has planned in this initiative.

The doors would be open weekly to the public who would like to research on almost any sports discipline that is being played in Guyana and further afield.

“This resource centre if used properly can be very beneficial to not only our young sportsmen and women, but to the administrators as well because we have books for coaching, physiotherapy and the list goes on,” said Minister Anthony.

It was also noted that an audio and video centre would be set up as well in the future so that persons, apart from reading on their respective sports discipline, can also get a chance to see a practical demonstration.

“These books are up to par  with the ones used in the colleges and schools in the US and the persons who we contracted to supply us with the books also supplies those schools as well, so they are up-to-date books and information as well, but it’s not like the library, it cannot be taken out,” the sports minister added.

A photo copying centre is also located at the centre where persons could pay and get their information copied.
Ultimately, the sports minister said, the Centre would be moved to the Woolford Avenue area where it would be more accessible by students.
“The Ministry is doing some work on the old National Sports Development Council (NSDC) building there and we would be relocating the centre there sometime next year. We chose there to be the permanent place for it because most of our schools are located around that area so they can have better access,” added the minister.

The Ministry of Sports would be conducting several courses and lectures on sports administration and would be facilitating sports in playing  a more educational role in the local school system.

“This is not just about us putting up a resource centre because we want to get the associations more involved. So we’ll be bringing  in some sports specialists . . .  to conduct some courses on administration and so on, so that we can help to strengthen some of these local associations,” Anthony added.
