Marriage officers must comply with the law

The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha said marriage officers should ensure that they comply with the law when solemnising marriages, in the wake of breaches found at the Registrar General’s office.

In a press release Pandit Persaud told a seminar of priests that they must always comply with the law.

He said according to reports received at the Registrar General’s office it ought to be understood that if an organisation can recommend a person to be appointed a marriage officer it can also recommend a revocation of the appointment.

Persaud said though he did not want to give an undertaking for priests outside the Hindu fold he gave assurances that anyone recommended by the organisation is expected to carry out his functions with honour and dignity.

The pandit said too there are certain basic requirements before a legal marriage can be carried out. Persaud said law does not permit a Justice of the Peace to perform marriages and only a person who is appointed a marriage officer can legalise a marriage.

He also posited that organisations from which marriage officers emerge should host training programmes and prepare educational handouts for their priests on their requirements and roles in order to have knowledgeable individuals serving the institution of marriage.
