‘Offensive’ remarks are damaging to the PNCR

Dear Editor,

Anyone would have recognized that damage that would have befallen the PNCR after Mervyn Williams resigned as Chairman of the party’s Region 3 Regional Committee. Indeed, the reasons advanced for the resignation are most damaging to a political party which fancies itself as an alternative to the current ruling PPP-led administration, particularly in the context of the nature of our political relationship.

Just imagine, as a prominent member and holder of the chairmanship of the Region 3 committee, Mr Williams was subjected to what he described as “offensive” discriminatory remarks addressed to him because he is not Afro-Guyanese. Well, this only convincingly confirms what many Guyanese have been saying at every national election prior to and post independence: The PNCR is baised and panders to Afro-Guyanese for political support.

According to Mr Williams, the offensive and discriminatory remarks were made in the presence of leader Robert Corbin, who chose not to upbraid the comrade who uttered them and neither did he denounce the statements. When then did he therefore recognize that the statement would damage the party?

Yours faithfully,
David DeGroot
