-final to take place today
Guyana’s Mahendra Persaud has made it into the Queen’s final at the 139th Annual Imperial Shooting championships currently in progress at Bisley rifle ranges in the United Kingdom.
Persaud defied unfavourable weather to advance to the finals after recording 147 points and 12 V-bulls in the preliminary competition; the cut off point for shooters reaching the finals was 146 points and 21 V-bulls.
Reports state that rain and lightning delayed the start of competition for more than one hour, while the wind was unpredictable for most of the day. Persaud, Guyana’s full-bore captain scored a possible 50 points with 4 V-bulls at the 500 yards range, and dropped just one point at 300 to score 49 points with 5- V-bulls, while at 600 yards he scored 48 points with 3 V-bulls. The Queens finals will take place today with most of the world’s top rifle shooters battling for the converted prize.
Over 1200 shooters from around the world are competing in the two-week event regarded as the most prestigious annual individual championships organised by the National Rifle Association (NRA) of the United Kingdom.
Another Guyanese, former national and Caribbean champion Richard Fields is also competing but no word was available on his performance.
Persaud in 2003 won a Gold Medal in the Tucker Aggregate, his best performance so far at Bisley.
According to the organizers the Imperial Meeting is the most prestigious of the competitions held by the NRA and the series of competitions includes events for Service rifle, Civilian Service Rifle, Cadets, Historic Arms, Schools, Gallery Rifle and Pistol, Match Rifle and Target Rifle.
The meeting opened with the Service Rifle competitions where forces from around the world competed for the Queen’s Medal.
