Fined $7,500 for using cell phone while driving

A man who drove his vehicle while using his cell phone was yesterday ordered to pay a fine of $7,500 or spend three weeks in prison when he appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Muneshwar Persaud pleaded guilty to the charge of using a cell phone while driving when it was read to him by the magistrate.

On August 4 at Georgetown, Persaud drove motor lorry GKK 781, while using a hand held telephone.

When given a chance to respond, the defendant told the court that he had gotten a call from his boss and decided to answer the phone while driving.
