Captain dies in Moruca River collision

A Charity, Essequibo captain died shortly after sustaining injuries when two boats collided on the Moruca River on Thursday afternoon.

Moses Narine, 50, was rushed to the Moruca Hospital for medical attention following the incident but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Police in a press release last evening said investigations have revealed that two boats, one captained by the deceased, collided at approximately 1.15pm that day.

Carl Atkinson, 55, of Kumaka Mines was the captain of the other boat which was propelled by a 25hp engine while Narine’s vessel was powered by a 15hp engine. Atkinson, police reported, was proceeding east along the Moruca River and was transporting four persons. Narine, carrying one person, was proceeding west.

Police said it is alleged that Atkinson was negotiating a turn in the river when the vessels collided. Narine sustained injuries during the collision and was taken to the hospital where he died at about 2.30 pm.
