Man fined for traffic breaches after accident

A man involved in an accident at Regent and King Streets last Friday that resulted in two persons being severely injured was fined $65,000 yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Michael Marcus pleaded guilty to the charges of breach of insurance, being an unlicensed driver and operating the vehicle without the consent of the owner.

He admitted that on August 14 at Regent and King streets he drove motor car PKK 2000 without having third party insurance in force at the time. He also admitted that he operated the car without a driver’s licence and without the consent of the owner of the car.

The prosecution stated that on the day in question Marcus was proceeding north along Regent Street when motor cycle CC6400 being ridden in a northern direction along King Street by Adrian Henry collided with him since Henry had failed to stop at the junction of Regent and King streets.

An unknown female who was the pillion rider was also involved in the accident. The prosecution told the court that Marcus would not be charged for the accident since Henry had caused it. The magistrate subsequently ordered that Marcus pay a fine totalling $65,000 or four months imprisonment.

Meanwhile, a press release from the George-town Public Hospital yesterday had stated that on Friday, Henry, 34, of Lot 141 South Sophia and an unknown female were admitted to the Accident and Emergency Unit shortly after the collision.

Henry had sustained injuries to his left leg and right eye and was taken to the Male Surgical Ward while the female, who sustained injuries to her head, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
