– Jeffery siblings, Pollard, Arjoon and Fernandes advance to second round
It was a bitter sweet day for Guyana at the 2009 Caribbean Senior Squash Championship which served off yesterday in the Cayman Islands as the Jeffery siblings, Keisha, Kayla and Kristian, Nicolette Fernandes, Victoria Arjoon, and Regan Pollard all advanced to the second round of the tournament.
National champion Kristian Jeffery got the better of Kyle Wilson in straight sets (11-7, 11-9 and 11-6) as he moves on to face Kevin Ross. His younger sister Kayla emulated his performance as she easily disposed of Yvonne West of Bermuda 11-1, 11-2 and 11-3 and would now face Carry Simple.
Kayla’s twin sister Keisha, who is the Caribbean junior champion, drew a bye in the first round and is down to face Karina Lutchmeesingh in the second round.
Victoria Arjoon was made to fight hard for her win during her clash with Bermuda’s Kim Morbey. The Guyanese was flawless in the first set but was stretched the extra mile in two sets (12-14, 12-10) but she bounced back to hold her own and close it off easily winning the game 11-3.
Fernandes who was seeded number one in the tournament also drew a bye in the first round and she will be in action with hometown girl Samantha Hennings.
Pollard in the men’s action, after winning the first set 11-5, went down 6-11 to Jamaica’s Joey Levy but he was able to bounce back and easily take the other two sets 11-6 and 11-3 and will now play Colin Ramasra.
Suffering ill fate though were Raphael DeGroot, Alexander Arjoon and Oliver Kear-Downes who were all booted from the championships.
DeGroot went down to Fabian Goodridge of Barbados in straight sets (11-7, 11-9 and 11-4); Arjoon put up some resistance to Ryan Abraham but lost 11-6, 10-12, 11-6 and 11-5, while Downes fell 11-7, 113 and 11-8 to Jake Kelly of the Cayman Islands.
The Guyanese trio would now have to play in the plate championships of the tournament which was also played yesterday. The 2009 Senior Caribbean Squash Championship is set to wrap-up this weekend.
