Ex-clerks granted $100,000 bail each over larceny from Power Marketing

Magistrate Priya Beharry on Wednesday granted a woman and a man bail in the sum of $100,000 each when they appeared before her at the Georgetown Magis-trate’s Court for allegedly stealing a quantity of cash from the Power Marketing Company.

Sasenarine Doodnauth, a 24-year-old father of one of ‘A’ Field, South Sophia and Samantha Khan, a 30-year-old mother of one of Lot 34 Garnett Street, Campbellville  both pleaded not guilty to separate charges of larceny by clerk or servant.

They denied that while they were employed as clerks or servants at Power Marketing Company they stole $830,000 from the company on October 10 last year.

The prosecution stated that the manager of the company had travelled to the US and left Doodnauth and Khan as the sole custodians and controllers of a signed cheque.

The prosecution said further that while the manager was away Doodnauth and Khan unlawfully made up several other cheques and signed and cashed them, amounting to a sum of $830,000.

The court was told that when the manager returned to Guyana, she discovered the forgeries and reported the matter.

Doodnauth and Khan were later arrested and charged with the offence.

However, attorney-at-law Vic Puran who represented Khan stated that since his client had been released on station bail she had reported to the police station for four months. He said that this showed that his client posed no risk of flight and  she should be admitted to bail.
Meanwhile, Attorney Mohamed Zafar, who represented Doodnauth applied for bail for him on the grounds that he had no other brushes with the law and  he was also placed on station bail.

The magistrate subsequently placed the duo on bail and  ordered that they return to court on September 14.
