During a Cabinet outreach on Saturday at the International Convention Centre, President Bharrat Jagdeo called for the school’s curriculum to reflect a greater interest in entrepreneurial skills.
According to a release from the Government Infor-mation Agency (GINA) the President was at the time outlining areas which he believed Guyanese can work selectively on to secure a prosperous future.
The head of state noted that, ”we have to find a way to alter our curriculum. This is something that we need to work with the private sector and others in doing. In the school’s curriculum we have to find a way of instilling entrepreneurial behaviour”.
On the same note, the President stated that such a renewed interest will go a far way in promoting a strong indigenous private sector, and cautioned that introducing the skill to youth as s/he grows old will be a mistake.
He also said that it is never too late to train early school leavers and even pensioners, the ultimate goal being to have a stronger workforce, GINA stated.
The head of state noted that if the various sectors ‘take off’ as he anticipates, there will be a labour problem locally, noting that the task for the future will be to ensure that everyone, including able-bodied and physically challenged persons, are provided with “a skill to participate in this new economy”, GINA stated. In order to achieve this goal the Guyanese leader called for a modern education delivery system which determines that the system is indeed doing an effective job at preparing the population for the 21st Century. GINA also stated that skills training continues to be an area of priority for the administration, noting that through the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport’s flagship programme, the Youth Entrepreneurial Skills Training (YEST), several youths, who for various reasons did not receive primary of secondary education, are offered a second chance.
