Alder, Rodney, Benn winners in long jump final

…at 55th annual police force athletics

The 55th Annual Guyana Police Force Athletics Championships began yesterday at the Eve Leary Sports Ground kicking off with the sprints and jumps.

In the men’s long jump final Trevor Benn representing police headquarters jumped a distance of 6.16 metres, ahead of his counterparts Sean Roberts of Division A and Jason Critchlow, another athlete representing headquarters.

Roberts was able to beat Critchlow by a slim margin having jumped 5.98m to give him the advantage over Critchlow’s 5.81m.

In the women’s long jump (overseas final) it was Guyanese Natasha Alder who came out on top with 4.57m. Trinidadian Euphemia Hoggins and Barbadian Sophiann Reece gained second and third place respectively with 4.29m and 3.89m.

In the local females long jump competition Latoya Rodney of Division A held a considerable margin to win against Genessa Todd (headquarters) and Tinelle Nestor, also of Division A. It was Rodney’s excellent skill which set her apart from the rest with her recorded jump of 4.12m compared to 3.74m and the third place jump of 3.58m.

Yesterday’s heats decided the line up for the women’s final in the 400m. In that draw expect to watch Kizzy Roberts, Gaylene Doris, Marlene Edwards, Andrea Hall, Leota Bobb, Angelica White and Asonda Mentore.

At the end of the day’s competition Police Headquarters had 117 points followed by Division A, 66, Division B, 34 and Division C, 20 points.

Guyana is in the lead in the international competition ahead of Trinidad and Tobago with a whopping 120 points. Trinidad have 38 and Barbados 31 points.

The championships continue today with the men’s and women’s triple jump, followed by the heats and finals of the 200m at the said venue.
