FITUG “gravely concerned” over alleged criminality of army, police

The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) says it is “gravely concerned” over recent and current allegations made against various units and members of the Disciplined Services.

FITUG, the country’s largest trade union grouping of some 35,000 workers, said in a press release that the population is moving to a stage where the Joint Services are being perceived as being involved in various forms of illegality and criminality.

At this stage, FITUG said, it agrees with Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Chief-of-Staff Commodore Gary Best that it is just a handful of rogue soldiers who give the GDF a tainted name.
It is certain too that Commissioner Henry Greene feels similarly about the Police Force, the release added.

However, FITUG noted that the explosive information that is reported that the Joint Services have been involved in murder, robbery and extortion “comes as a shock and a betrayal to Guyanese.” And the “very idea that soldiers could collude in the planning and execution of such evil mischief against fellow Guyanese is beyond belief and comprehension,” FITUG stated.
