Gov’t condemns horrific crime by Coast Guard ranks

Government has condemned  the illicit involvement of Coast Guard ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the recent $17M river heist and murder of 23-year old Dweive Kant Ramdass, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.

Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, at a post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday said that the administration echoed “the disbelief of the leadership and the rank and file of the Joint Services at the news of the horrific crime committed by ranks in the Coast Guard located in the Essequibo River.”

And the administration contends that such  behaviour is so unbelievable and unacceptable, Dr Luncheon said, that the service must commit to a dedicated and  intense examination of underlying factors.

Moreover, government has urged a comprehensive investigation and the application of the full force of military and criminal law to those rogue elements in the service, GINA stated.

However, the Cabinet Secretary stressed the importance of continued faith in the Joint Services even in light of this reprehensible act perpetrated by its members.

He noted also that heightened civic responsibility is one constructive outcome of this criminal act, and it should not be overturned by the actions of those sworn to protect the people.
