Water delivery schedules on the East Coast have resumed

Dear Editor,
We truly appreciate this opportunity to respond to Reverend Gideon Cecil’s letter ‘Water woes in Agriculture Road (SN, August 24).

Let me first express gratitude to Reverend Cecil for his public acknowledgement of our prompt response to representation made by residents of Agriculture Road and to reinforce our commitment towards working closely with communities in order to improve water supplies countrywide.

Indeed, consumers along the East Coast of Demerara and other areas had experienced disruptions to water delivery schedules during the course of the previous week and over the last weekend, resulting from power supply challenges affecting many of our production sites.  Some stability has since returned, resulting in the resumption of delivery schedules. Our Divisional Operations Manager for the East Coast has confirmed this fact with Reverend Cecil during his visit to the area on August 25, 2009.

We however believe there might have been some misunderstanding regarding the report that services previously disconnected in Agriculture Road had been illegally reconnected. Our Divisional Operations Manager has since verified that the services in question remain disconnected. Nonetheless, we urge all responsible consumers to continue their vigilance and to report cases of tampering and abuse of the water supply system to the Guyana Water Incorporated.

Allow me to reassure Reverend Cecil that while our pumps are adequately rated, it is incumbent on each and every consumer to use water prudently at all times, failing which those consumers at the tail-ends of our distribution networks can experience reduced levels of service.

Feedback on our service is always most welcome and we encourage our valued customers to continue to report leaks and to seek information by contacting our Customer Call Centre on telephone number 227 8701.

Yours faithfully,
Yuri Chandisingh
