Suspects in La Grange murder released

The persons detained by police as they investigated the murder of octogenarian Kharpattie Shivnauth have been released.

The remaining persons, who belonged to the same La Grange, West Bank Demerara neighbourhood as the murdered woman, were released over the weekend. Her son, Gopaul Shivnauth yesterday expressed his disappointment with the police’s investigations. “Me ain’t satisfied with what the law do here,” he stated. “They coulda do better… 100% better”, the deeply upset man said.

Kharpattie died of suffocation, a post-mortem examination had revealed. Reports are that the woman, who lived alone, had retired to bed on August 28 when a person or persons broke into her home. She was gagged and apparently beaten before being robbed and left to die.

Persons living in proximity to the woman’s home said they heard no sounds or suspected anything unusual during the period the old woman was being attacked. The incident is believed to have occurred between 11 pm and 1 am.

The woman is said to have been robbed of an undisclosed sum of money along with a quantity of jewellery.
Police had said that Kharpattie was discovered nude, bound and gagged.
