A thirty-four-year-old man was granted bail on Wednesday in the sum of $75,000 when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing a chainsaw from his employer.
Samuel Ray of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny which stated that he stole a chainsaw valued $188,000, the property of Elzado Lopes between August 23 and 24 at Tiger Creek, Essequibo.
The prosecution objected to Ray’s bail application when he made it, on the grounds that he might pervert the court of justice if released by tampering with the complainant in the matter.
The prosecution noted that Lopes is well-known to the defendant since he was his employer.
Meanwhile, Ray stated that he never stole the chainsaw but one of Lopes’ friends had found the saw and sold it to another friend.
The magistrate subsequently granted him bail and ordered that the case be transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for September 30.
