West Coast Denerara hit by power, water shortages

GPL says the frequent power outages on the West Coast Demerara are due to increased load and inadequate generating capacity at the Versailles Power Station.

In a press release the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) said consumers on the West Coast Demerara particularly beyond Leonora have been experiencing frequent power interruptions since last Sunday. The company said it expects to install an additional 1.6MW Caterpillar unit at Versailles to both guarantee an acceptable minimum generating capacity at Versailles and meet the increased demand.

GPL advises consumers to conserve electricity as power demand during the day is now exceeding 69MW in some instances and this requires all generating capacity to be on line most of the time.

Meanwhile, in a separate press release, the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) said the current disruption of water supply on the West Coast Demerara was due to a power shortfall at production sites.

GWI said service to the area will restart when power supply is fully restored. The affected areas include ‘Look Out’, Grove, Hyde Park, Parika, Hydronie, Barnwell, Philadelphia, Vergenoegen, Le Destin, Ruby, Farm, Greenwich Park, Bushy Park, Good Hope, Orangestein, Groenveldt, Edinburgh, Anna Catherina, De Willem, Zeeburg, De Kinderen and sections of Meten-Meer-Zorg.

During this period of interruption GWI is urging customers to desist from tampering with water mains and service connections. For updates customers are advised to contact GWI’s Customer Service Call Centre at telephone number 227-8701.
