Powell nosed out by Gay but Foster-Hylton remains unbeaten

THESSALONIKI, Greece, CMC – Former World record holder Asafa Powell was narrowly edged out by American Tyson Gay in a dramatic finish but Brigitte Foster-Hylton extended her winning streak with another sensational victory on the opening day of the IAAF/VTB Bank World Athletics Final yesterday. Powell led for most of the 100 metres sprint but Gay caught him on the line to win in 9.88 seconds at the Kaftanzoglio Stadium, and record his fourth victory over the Jamaican in five meetings this season.

The 26-year-old Powell came home in 9.90 seconds with American Davis Patton third in 10 seconds. There was no such ill fortune for Foster-Hylton who extended her winning streak with an equally narrow triumph in the women’s 100 metres hurdles.

The reigning World champion emerged from a slow start to surge to the front, just metres from the end and win the event in a photo finish.

She was timed at 12.58 seconds with American Dawn Harper (12.61) and Jamaican Delloreen Ennis-London (12.61) finishing second and third respectively.
