Fire service averts disaster at GWI

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) yesterday morning averted what could have been a huge fire at the Guyana Water Incorporated’s (GWI) shelter belt location at Vlissengen Road.

As a result there was a brief interruption of power at the location and disruption of services.

When contacted about the incident, GWI Public Relations Officer Timothy Austin told Stabroek News that one of the company’s transformers had erupted in flames. However he would not say what had caused it since an investigation was still ongoing.

According to him, the fire department responded promptly and extinguished the fire. He said electrical power was lost for some time, but was restored as the Guyana Power and Light Inc also responded to the emergency.

By yesterday afternoon, Austin said, the company’s operations were up and running and services back to normal.
