GBBC moves to bring boxing to international standards

– Enforces new rules and regulation for fights

With immediate effect the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) will be enforcing the regulations with respect  to reporting procedures for boxers and trainers contracted to participate in GBBC-sanctioned cards in accordance with international practices.

Since the GBBC is pushing to bring local boxing to homes around the country and further afield via television, starting with tomorrow’s world title card dubbed “Caribbean Fury” the GBBC  is stressing that all boxers and trainers (Chief Seconds) contracted to participate in cards are to report to the Officials’ Table at the venue of the card at lease one hour before the scheduled start of the card regardless of the position of the fights.

At the time of reporting to the Official Table, all boxers and trainers are to present their Fighter/Trainer Licenses, the GBBC stated yesterday in a release.

Expired licenses will have to be renewed immediately to ensure the eligibility of the boxer or trainer to participate in the card.

Should boxers and trainers fail to report to the Official Table at the stipulated time, the fighters would fined  five percent of their contracted purse while the trainers would be fined 0.5%.

The previous card was plagued with untimely arrivals of boxers to the ring.

At that event,  names were called several times before the boxers eventually made their way to the ring.

However, according to the release that is about to change since the GBBC is insisting that the fighters be ready to enter the ring when summoned by the official announcer regardless of the possible premature conclusion of preceding fights.

Unless otherwise indicated, fights will begin 15 minutes after the conclusion of the preceding fight.

According to the GBBC, boxers who fail to present themselves in the ring for the commencement of their scheduled fight at the appointed time will be fined five percent of their purse. Reigning champions will enter the ring last and will be allowed to select the corner of their choice.

With regards to non title fights, a decision on which boxer will enter the ring first and from which corner of the ring he will fight will be made on the night of the official weigh-in.

If boxers and trainers continue to report late to the venue and to the ring, and in the opinion of the Board are flagrantly disregarding the laid down procedures, the Board will increase the penalty. Further violations can lead to the imposing of bans or the disbarment of boxers and trainers from competing in GBBC sanctioned events.

The Director of Bouts has the authority to withhold the purse of any boxer who in his considered opinion has infringed the rules of boxing, contravened the constitution of the GBBC or behaved in a manner that would bring the sport into disrepute.

With immediate effect, the GBBC will be enforcing the regulations with regards to the management of the Dressing Rooms during GBBC sanctioned Boxing Cards in accordance with international practices, the release stated.

Dressing Rooms are off limits to all unauthorized persons and in the case of a championship fight, only the boxer and four persons including the trainer are allowed and in a normal fight, only the boxer and three persons including the trainer will be allowed.

Also, the GBBC will be enforcing the regulations enshrined in its constitution with regards to personnel authorized to be in boxers’ corner in the Ring.

In the case of a Championship fight, four persons including the trainer are authorized to be in the boxer’s corner and only one of the Seconds is authorized to enter the ring to manage the boxer between rounds and only one Second is allowed to stand on the apron of the ring while the other two will remain on the floor.

Meanwhile in a non title fight, three persons including the Chief Second are authorized to be in the boxer’s corner and only one of the Seconds is authorized to enter the ring to manage the boxer between rounds and one second is allowed to stand on the apron of the ring while the other will remain on the floor.

The GBBC is warning that the non adherence to these procedures will result in the levying, of fines as stipulated and/or the initiating of disciplinary actions against culpable persons.
