Representatives of the bank were never summoned to give evidence in this matter

Dear Editor,
We refer to the report that appeared in your newspaper on Friday, October 16, 2009 headlined `Case dismissed against former Republic Bank tellers, carpenters’.

In your report you indicated that Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson dismissed the matter against the accused for want of prosecution after counsel for the accused advised that since Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited had been repaid the Bank had ceased showing interest in the matter.

While we appreciate that you reported what was said in Court, we nevertheless wish to advise you of the inaccuracy of the statements made. Matters of this nature are prosecuted by the police and the Bank’s representatives are only required to attend when summoned.  Representatives of the Bank had never been summoned to Court to give evidence in the matter and as a consequence never attended Court.

At all times the Bank co-operated fully with the police to provide all the requested documentation and statements in preparation for trial.  This can be substantiated by the Police.

Yours faithfully,
Michelle Johnson
