Brazilian man found gagged, dead in Robb St home

A Brazilian man was yesterday afternoon discovered dead in his Robb Street, Bourda home; his mouth had been gagged.

The dead man, who’s name was given as Joāo, was said to be about 60 years old. He has been living in Guyana for the last seven years and lived alone at E½ Lot 80 Robb Street, up to when he died. Some neighbours claimed that the man had also been stabbed, but neither the police nor the two women who made the discovery would confirm this.

The man’s body was discovered yesterday just after 5 pm by neighbours.  One of the neighbours, a Brazilian woman named Nubia Da Silva, who cooked for the man, told reporters last evening that she became concerned when she did not see Joāo for the day. She explained that everyday between 8 am and 9 am, he would go to her home for coffee and return at midday for lunch.  The woman said that yesterday the man did show up and after the entire day passed without him putting in an appearance, she decided to go and check on him. According to her, when she went to his home, she discovered the door open and when she entered, she saw the man lying in the bathroom.

Another neighbour, Anita Seecharran, said she accompanied Da Silva to Joāo’s home. According to her, when they entered, she saw items scattered about the floor.  She also said that the man’s head was tied. Seecharran was the person who alerted the police.

She said she last saw Joāo man alive on Sunday evening around 9 o’clock, as she was about to go out. She said he was sitting in front of his yard at the time and had a brief exchange with her.  “He was a very good person, a good neighbour,” the woman said.

Another Brazilian man said that Joāo would sell items and would occasionally have substantial amounts of cash on him.  According to this man, Joāo used to work at a hotel in Robb Street as a handyman and had lived there prior to moving into his Robb Street home.

This witness claimed that he saw Joāo in the area yesterday morning, surmising that he must have been killed some time during yesterday. He described him as a very quiet man who did not  have any conflict with anyone.
