Seniors treated to health checks, beauty services

As part of the Month of the Elderly activities, the Region Five Probation and Welfare Department recently pampered several senior citizens and treated them to health care at the Fort Wellington and Mahaichony hospitals.

The elders had their blood pressure and blood sugar tested. It was discovered that most of them who never bothered to go for medical check-ups were suffering from hypertension. They were placed at health centres in their areas where they would go for regular check-ups. Senior Probation and Welfare Officer of the region Dollette Nicholson told this newspaper that officers would make “periodic checks” on the old folks.

Meanwhile the department also arranged for staff of Claudisa’s Beauty Salon of Bush Lot, West Berbice to pamper the elders. They were given pedicures and manicures complete with nail polish and fancy nail art designs. The females, most of whom were widows said the pampering made them feel very special. According to Macy Mingo, Eglanteen Peters and Irene Semple the pampering felt like “back in the days”.

They even jokingly said that it was a pity they no longer had their partners so they could go home and show off their polished nails.
