Miner hurt in tree fall still in hospital

Alfred was injured while Carlos Fernandes and Silvio Domingo were killed when the large tree fell over the pit, hitting them in the process. The incident occurred Monday at Marudi Mountain, Deep South Rupununi, Region Nine. Alfred’s sister, Una Michael could not say what the condition of her brother was yesterday but told Stabroek News that he remains hospitalized.

This newspaper learnt yesterday that there was an excavator in the pit and the operator saw the tree as it began to fall and attempted to hold it up but his efforts were futile. The pit was a shallow one, this newspaper was informed and powerful water pumps were used to clear the soil and this may have contributed to the tree falling, since it was at the edge of the pit.

Fernandes, 30, of Karaudarnaua Village, South Rupununi, and Domingo, 35 of Aishalton Village, also in the South Rupununi were buried in their villages on Tuesday. The men had only gone to the mines a week ago to work.
