Cops nab truant girls in abandoned church

– males escape
Six schoolgirls were taken into custody yesterday after police nabbed them in an old abandoned church at Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara with five males, who escaped.

The girls, whose ages range from 15 to 17, remained in custody at the Wales Police Station up to yesterday afternoon. They were held at around 1 pm. Two taxi drivers, who transported them to the building, were also detained by police.

This newspaper was told that a concerned citizen called law enforcement officials after noticing what was happening in the church. A passing patrol was notified and went to the building. The officers were forced to kick down the door, a police source said. At least five males in varying stages of undress fled the building and escaped. However, the girls were caught.

A police source told this newspaper that one of the girls had been suspended indefinitely from school because of her behaviour while another was suspended last week. The girls are students of two West Demerara schools.

The taxi drivers reportedly denied being part of the incident and said that they were paid to transport the girls to the location.

Police contacted a probation officer and the girl’s parents following the incident.
