The volunteers will be working with the Ruimveldt Parent Support Group and United Action for Differently-Abled Persons as well as the National Commission on Disability to speak with minibus drivers and place stickers inside their minibuses to emphasise that persons with disabilities all have a ‘Right to Ride,’ a news release stated.
This is part of a sensitisation campaign that speaks out for persons with disabilities to enjoy their right to move around and participate in employment, social activities and to contribute to community and social development of Guyana, the release added.
It also noted that the minibus drivers-the ‘Kings of the Road’-need to be involved in building a more friendly, more respectful society towards all disabled people.
This activity emphasises this year’s theme for International Day for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, 2009, which is observed every December 3 – ‘ Realizing the Millennium Development Goals for All: Empowering Persons with Disabilities and their Communities Around the World.’
This sticker campaign will close off the eventful National Disability Week 2009.
