Stabroek Market porter denies larceny of silver ring

A 24-year-old Stabroek Market porter was placed on $25,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to simple larceny before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that Levi Williams of ‘F’ Norton Street, Lodge yesterday stole one silver ring valued $20,000 from Delly Payne.

According to Prosecutor Stephen Telford, the item was recovered in Williams’s possession. He was searched by the police and the ring was found in the hat he was wearing. Telford asked for substantial bail.

Williams in his defence said that Payne had pawned the ring to him for $2,000 and he wasn’t paying up so he held onto the ring.

Payne said that Williams’s account was not true. He related to the magistrate that he was at Big Market and took off the ring to hang it on a chain with others because it was too big. Payne said he placed the ring on a bench near to where Williams was standing. He said he left and when he returned the ring was missing and he questioned Williams.

Payne told the magistrate, “I ain’t expect nobody to pick it up,” when he was asked why he left his ring on the bench.

Williams is to return to Court Two on December 15.
