Father, son remanded for carnal knowledge of girl, 13

A Parika man and his son were remanded to prison on Thursday for carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl.

Mohamed Safeek, 65, and Mohamed Shazim Safeek, 27, both of Parika, were not required to plead to the charge, which was read by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, who remanded them.

It is alleged that Mohamed Shazim Safeek, between December 1 and December 31, 2008 at Parika had carnal knowledge of the girl. It is also alleged that Mohamed Safeek on December 1, 2008 and April 4, 2009 had carnal knowledge of the same girl.

Both men, farmers, are married. The matter was called to the bench and a discussion between the men’s defence counsel, Glen Hanoman and the magistrate ensued. The men were subsequently remanded and the matter was transferred to the Leonora Magistrates’ Court for December 15.
