Lilac is a hit this year

It’s that time of year when we’re cleaning house and decking the halls. And an important part of preparing for the holidays is choosing the curtains. So we visited a few stores to find out which colours, patterns and styles are popular this season.
What is Christmas without reds and burgundies?

20091213christyletwoWhile these colours are still popular this season, it seems
that the ‘hot’ colour for 2009 is lilac. In second place come warm, earthy tones like rich browns, while various shades of green and the perennial gold retain their allure.
However, in several of the stores which sold ready-made curtains and which Sunday Stabroek visited, lilacs were unquestionably the biggest hit.

Sales representative at DeSinco’s decor department, Debbie, explained that every year the store selected a colour scheme for the season.

This year’s theme was lilac, she said, and many persons were going for it.
At KeiShar’s too lilac paired with silver was what the customers were seeking out, we were told. Apart from that, rich chocolate browns and greens were also popular choices.

But over at Best Bargains on Water Street, the trend was a little different; their fastest-selling curtains were a burgundy brocade with gold in a valance style.

This was closely followed by gold and chocolate browns. A somewhat unique colour mix that had been sold out, the sales representative told the newspaper, was black brocade patterned with gold.

At Ariel Enterprise located in Gafoors Shopping Complex, Houston, curtains with valances were the rage. Here brocade with gold and burgundy mixtures, greens, and brown and gold were the shoppers’ favoured choices this season for dressing their windows.

In terms of style, valances whether simple scallops or something more elaborate, are the ones which are selling best.

Meanwhile over at the stores which are selling curtain materials for customers to stitch up themselves, brocade is the popular material. You can have yours with scallops or without in a variety of shades. Then there is lace and for some, silk.

AAt Curtains and Draperies located on upper Regent Street silk is the choice of its shoppers. This newspaper was told that customers were going for something other than the typical fabric. Curtains and Draperies not only sell curtain materials they also make the curtains to your specifications. Here too, the lilac theme seems the predominant one.
Further down Regent Street, at R Sookraj and Sons, green scalloped-edged brocade followed by gold are what the customers are buying the most of. Over at Anand’s, not far away, gold scalloped-edged brocade followed by greens, chocolate brown and lilacs are ‘best buys.’ Also popular is lace.

Further up at Shamdas Kirpalani, the more traditional brocades in gold, green, brown and burgundy are the material and colours of choice.

Also being sold, we were told, is ‘sheer.’ And across the road at Avishkars the lilac brocade had already been sold out, while the remaining popular choices were green, blue, peach, mint-green and red.

On our final stop on Regent Street, at Gobind’s Variety Store, gold brocade was a hit. We were told that of the ready-made curtains in stock the colour green was a popular choice.
