Tobago couple shot dead at home

(Trinidad Guardian) – A Tobago couple has been shot dead. Reports say that Kenneth George and his partner Daislyn Hunte had just returned from closing their respective business places, and were having a meal, when they were attacked. The killings took place at their Feeder Road, Canaan, home, just after ten o‘clock on Saturday night.

George was a Play Whe booth proprietor, and Hunte owned a popular clothing store in Canaan. Investigators told the Guardian that George was shot in the head and neck, while Hunte was shot once in the temple. George was a former fireman. There were no eyewitnesses to the murders, but police believe that a breakthrough would be made.

Neighbours say they heard loud explosions, and on investigating found the couple lying face down in a pool of blood, in the living room of their home. Police say robbery may have been the motive for the killing of the couple.

The couple was described by people who new them as friendly, helpful, well-liked members of the community. When T&T Guardian visited relatives of the couple on Sunday afternoon, emotions were still high.

They said they were still in shock, and could not come to terms with the deaths. They added that the couple was loved by everyone, and could not understand who would want to do such harm to them.

Tobagonians generally are calling for heightened security measures to be put in place at the nation’s ports of entry. Speaking with the Guardian at the murder scene on Saturday night, taxi driver and concerned citizen of Tobago, Christopher Williams, said the killings would destroy Tobago’s tourism sector. “This is very deplorable. It is bad for tourism; it’s bad for our returning residents right now; it will haunt them.

“We are fed up of this kind of thing. The whole thing is that people have been calling for the longest while for some vehicle scanners at the port, and no one seems to be paying attention to this, and look what is happening. “We do not have much people in Tobago. It is time the authorities get up and get and start doing something about this situation in Tobago. We really need to step up the security.” Asst Police Commissioner for Tobago, Allan Crooks, told T&T Guardian on Sunday morning, that his officers were working assiduously to bring the perpetrators to justice. Tobago’s murder toll stands at 15.
