Thirty-four-year-old Mark De Abreau of Lot 66 Broad Street, Charlestown was yesterday placed on $10,000 bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly behaving in a disorderly manner while being at the scene of a shooting incident last Saturday.
The proprietor of Marco Trading pleaded not guilty to the charge of disorderly behaviour when acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him.
He denied that on December 19, at Kitty, while being in a public place he behaved disorderly.
His lawyer Mark Waldron in association with Nigel Hughes had stated that the incident stemmed from a very unfortunate event.
He said that on the morning in question at about 3 De Abreau had received a call informing him that his nephew and his friend had been shot. He noted that his client and his father then rushed to the scene of the incident where they saw two bodies lying lifelessly on the ground and a man with a gun over one of the bodies about to kick it.
The lawyer stated that observing this, his client became angry and openly voiced his displeasure over the situation.
He noted that his client became more infuriated when the police refused to take the two injured persons to the hospital.
The lawyer noted that his client and the two injured persons all remained on the scene for about a half hour before his client decided to call the Alberttown Police Station who then sent a mobile police patrol which took the casualties to the hospital. De Abreau was later detained and subsequently placed on $10,000 station bail.
Waldron then requested that his client be placed on his own recognisance.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor Alexis David Hossanah stated that on the day in question Assistant Superintendent Cambridge shot two males after a confrontation. She said that shortly after, De Abreau approached the policeman and began behaving disorderly. De Abreau was then arrested and later charged with the offence.
The magistrate later ordered that De Abreau appear back in court on January 20 next year.
Reports are that Hewley Nicholas Barker, 28, of Norton Street was fatally shot outside Roopa’s Bar at Station Street, Kitty some time after 2 am, while Mark Caesar, 30, of St Stephen’s Street was wounded. According to reports Barker was shot at close range in his heart and succumbed to his injury at the scene, while Caesar was shot in the back.
The police have alleged that these two men had assaulted Superintendent Cambridge shortly after he had scolded their friends for behaving disorderly.
