20th Anniversary Kashif and Shanghai Tournament…GDF and Tigers through to quarterfinals

Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and BK International Western Tigers were the final two teams to make it through to the quarterfinal round of the 20th Anniversary Kashif and Shanghai Football Tournament when they defeated their opponents on Wednesday night at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground.

GDF sank Seawall United 3 – 1in the feature encounter while Western Tigers devoured their prey, Victoria Kings, 4 – 0 in the curtain raiser.

GDF will play defending champions Pele FC and Tigers five-time champions Bakewell Top XX tonight at the Mackenzie Sports Complex Ground in Linden where action is expected to get underway at 6pm.

Night five of the competition saw Dwayne Ali recording a brace to help the `Tigers’ into the next round while GDF produced an all round display to comfortably get past Seawall.

Victoria Kings and Western Tigers matched each other in resolute defending and good all round awareness which led to neither team scoring in the first half.

However, Kings made the first mistake and paid for it dearly when Shawn `Bubbly’ Beveney  scored for the Tigers in the 67th minute.

Ali then made his presence felt when he doubled Tigers’ lead in the 74th minute then completed his double in the 88th minute to account for Tigers’ third goal.

Their fourth goal came in the first minute of injury and stoppages time when the lack of fitness by the Kings’ players saw them withering and created easy openings for the opposition.

In the GDF/Seawall encounter Seawall held off the opposition until the minute before half time when Usi Phillip drew first blood.

Upon resumption, David Alleyne opened up the scoring when he found the back of the net in the 61st minute then Kevin Carter tripled the lead when he scored in the 64th minute. The opposition’s consolation goal was scored in the 67th minute compliments of Clement Brown.
