Ashanti Shultz is currently on trial before Justice William Ramlal for the murder of a hospital porter, who she allegedly shot on Main Street during September 2007.
Shultz, a 28-year-old broker of 109 Eccles, East Bank Demerara was charged on September 16 with the murder of Kenneth Nero. The 58-year-old hospital porter was fatally wounded during the Main Street shooting incident.
It was reported that Shultz and other women were involved in an argument when she allegedly went to her car and took out the weapon. She then allegedly fired the shots hitting Nero. Nero was said to be sitting next to a ticket booth close to the New Courtyard Restaurant and Bar when he was hit.
Shultz was committed to stand trial in the High Court on February 5, 2008 by Magistrate Oneidge Walrond-Allicock. The magistrate had stated that a prima facie case had been made out against her during the Preliminary Inquiry. When asked whether she had anything to say, Shultz had replied, “I reserve my defence for the High Court”.
Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes is appearing for Shultz during the trial. Ganesh Hira will be presenting the state’s case. The jurors were selected on Thursday and the matter has been adjourned to Monday.
