Farmer accused of forging will

A man accused of forging a will for a plot of land for his own benefit was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $200,000 when he appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that between November 9, 1987 and June 19, 2006, with intent to defraud, Puran Lall, 56, a rice farmer of 7 Essequibo Coast forged one testament left for his brother Kumar Lall  by their mother Radha Lall knowing same to be forged.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of forgery when it was read to him by the magistrate.

The prosecution told the court that Radha Lall, now deceased, had left in her will a plot of land for her son Kumar. According to the prosecution the accused for whatever reasons forged the will to show that the plot of land was left for him instead.
The attorney who represented the accused argued however that his client was innocent of the charges laid against him since the plot of land was indeed left for him [Puran].

According to the lawyer the matter is an ongoing one with several others which have already engaged the attention of the High Court. The attorney added that because of several grievances which his client has with his brother Kumar, the VC has made this false accusation against the accused.
The virtual complainant (VC) was not present in court.
Puran was ordered to attend the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on September 7.
