The two men accused of robbing a Linden businessman at gunpoint were yesterday remanded to prison when they appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on August 13 at Linden, Travis Brewseer, 18, of 114 Victory Valley, Wismar, Linden and Winston Hinds, also 18, of 50 Blueberry Hill, Wismar Linden, being armed with a gun, robbed Rudolph Sinclair of a quantity of cash and four gold chains totalling $880,000.
The duo was not required to plead to the indictable charge of robbery under arms when it was read to them by the magistrate.
Attorney-at-law Lawrence Harris who represented Hinds made an application that his client be admitted to reasonable bail, highlighting that the defendant has had no previous brushes with the law.
Harris told the court that it was a rather unfortunate situation in which his client found himself, adding that “he got tangled into a web.”
Harris told the court also that Hinds who has just left school has no father figure since his father is in the United States and is paralysed. “He just needs guidance,” the lawyer said.
Brewseer was unrepresented by counsel.
Police Prosecutor Tyndall, however, strongly objected to the bail application made by the defence attorney on the grounds that the offence committed is a serious and prevalent one.
The accused were both remanded to prison and ordered to return to court on October 6 for reports.
According to reports, on the day in question Sinclair was in a boat crossing the Demerara River when the incident occurred.
Sinclair was on his way home shortly before midnight when he was reportedly attacked by the two while he was in a boat along with the captain, boat conductor and two young men. As the boat reached the middle of the river the two young men attacked him. “I just see deh man pull out a gun and he started attacking me. He keep lashing me in meh face with de gun and I was fighting back,” he said.
As he wrestled with his assailant the other man attacked him from behind choking him as he relieved him of his gold chains.
Meanwhile, a third person has been arrested in connection with the case.
