The boy, Marlon Lowe, of Norton Street, told Stabroek News yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was taken by his mother for treatment, that he and another student had an argument on the opening day of the new school term last Tuesday. He said his class teacher had placed him and a few other students in another classroom which was occupied by another class at the time. He said a student from that class began taunting him that day and even threatened him last Friday afternoon with a piece of pipe.

The second form student related that yesterday afternoon when classes were dismissed around 3 pm, the perpetrator of the incident and his friends launched an attack on him in the school yard. He said he was pushed to the ground by one of his attacker’s friends and while attempting to get to his feet, the student charged towards him with an ice-pick. Lowe said the young man stood over him and “start jukking”, as he tried to stop the perpetrator from inflicting wounds to other parts of his body.

Lowe was picked up by his sister shortly after the incident and was taken to his mother’s place of work before being rushed to the hospital. Fortunately for Lowe, the wound was not serious.

According to his mother, the school’s administration needs to look into the high incidence of students taking various sharp devices to school. She said she had raised the issue before, highlighting, ice–picks, knives and used surgical blades as some of the instruments teachers of the school have found in the possession of students.

The woman said that she will be visiting the school today to raise her concerns with the school’s administration. Lowe was sent home from the hospital after he was attended to by hospital staff yesterday afternoon.
