Pedestrian, motor cyclist killed in separate accidents

A 57-year-old Grove, East Bank Demerara woman was killed yesterday morning after she was struck down by a car while crossing the Providence Public Road on the East Bank of Demerara.

According to a police release, Sarah Singh, a housewife, was crossing the public road from the west to the eastern side when she was struck down by a private security vehicle. The release stated that the woman died before receiving medical attention and the driver and the vehicle are in police custody.

The police also reported that 72-year-old Mohamed Ali of Lot 18, McDoom Public Road, East Bank Demerara, died following an accident on the McDoom Public Road which occurred around 8.45 on Saturday night.

According to the police, Ali was driving his motor cycle, CE 1689 along the western side of the roadway heading north when he was struck down by a car, PGG 9797 which was driven by one Leon Singh. He was in the process of turning in an easterly direction when he was struck by the car which was proceeding north at the time. Ali died at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and the driver of the car is in police custody.

Meanwhile, 40-year-old Neighborhood Policing operative, Aubrey Persaud of Berbice, succumbed on Friday afternoon to injuries he sustained following an accident on the Palmyra Public Road last Monday.

The police reported that Persaud was riding along the roadway heading south when he came into the path of a motor lorry which was also heading in the same direction.

Persaud passed away while seeking treatment at the GPH and his body is awaiting a post-mortem examination, the police said.
