A trucking service operator who appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer the charge of causing death by dangerous driving was remanded to prison after he was denied bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
Sunil Roopnarine, 37, of Lot 11 Alliance Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara is alleged to have caused the death of Earl Abrams by driving motor lorry GLL 6308 in a dangerous manner. He pleaded not guilty.
In his application for bail for Roopnarine, Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson told the court that his client is married with two children and has been residing at his given address for the past 37 years.
Thompson stated that his client is not a flight risk and gave the assurance that Roopnarine will attend trial once granted bail.
The defence attorney also said that the circumstances of the accident should have been further investigated since it was not his client who was driving the vehicle at the time the accident occurred. A porter by the name of James Dick was said to be driving the vehicle at the time of the accident and police couldn’t locate him.
However, Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford asked that Roopnarine not be admitted to bail based on the circumstance. He pointed out that it was alleged that the accused was the one driving the vehicle and efforts have been made to locate the porter.
After listening to the arguments, Magistrate Robertson denied bail and the matter was transferred to Court Six for statements today.
