I enjoy reading Freddie Kissoon’s daily article in the Kaieteur News. There are times when he is right on the mark and at others, way off base. In his column of June 8, captioned ‘Party paramountcy and the long tragedy of Guyana,’ he concludes by stating “Guyana’s tragedy has to have a happy ending. It will in 2011.”

Is Mr Kissoon being overly optimistic?  With about two years to go before the next general elections, the PNC seems to be on a path of internal self destruction. Can this party put its house in order, rebrand itself, and secure the financial resources to mount a successful challenge to the incumbent PPP in 2011? And when will the AFC put forward and start selling to the Guyanese people, a comprehensive vision for national unity and development?

In my view, it is not the “pavlovian” syndrome of Indo-Guyanese that keeps the PPP in power. Instead, it is the alternatives from which the voters have to choose at election time. It is often a choice between bad and worse.

In 2011 we will know the outcome of Freddie’s prediction.
