Persaud has slim lead

Fullbore captain Mahendra Persaud has taken a crucial one-point lead as the competitors in the X Class go into an intriguing final day of the National Rifle Shooting championships today at the Timehri ranges.

Persaud has a current grand aggregate score of 214 points after two days of competition with last week’s winner Inspector Dane Blair and defending champion Ransford Goodluck hot on his heels with 213 points each.

However, Blair holds the second position with 27 V-bulls while Goodluck secured 22 V-bulls and is currently in third, as Persaud completed the day on 84 points with 12 V-bulls with scores of 49 with 7 at 300 yards and a possible 35 with 5 V-bulls at 600 yards.

Richard Fields occupied the second position with 83 points with 8 V-bulls with 49 -4  at 300 and 34-4 at 600 yards followed by Goodluck on 83-7 in third place, Blair in fourth with 81-9, ASP Paul Slowe 80-9 fifth, Dylan Fields sixth with 80 -5, Ryan Sampson seventh (79-7) and Claude Duguid eighth (76-4).

Goodluck the reigning champion who was in an uncomfortable fifth place after last Saturday’s rain-affected first day, bounced back into contention with two possible scores at the 900 and 300 yards ranges.

He shot 50 points with 8 V-bulls at the 900 yards which was rescheduled from last week and then recorded 50 with 3 V-bulls at 300 yards. He however dropped two points at 600 yards to finish on 33 with 2 V-bulls.

The current standings in the X Class competition reads: Mahendra Persaud 214 with 26 V-bulls, Blair 213-27, Goodluck 213-22, Richard Fields 212-23, Dylan Fields 209-22, Duguid  204-15, Sampson 202-19 and Slowe 202-14.

Charles Deane who has a five-point handicap leads the ‘O’ Class with a grand aggregate score of 201 points with 10 V-bulls followed by Lt. Col. Terry Stuart with 201 with 16  V-bulls, Colin Loncke with 190 points with 8 V-bulls while debutant Peter Persaud is currently on 136 with 4 V-bulls.

In the results of the 900 yards ‘X’ Class : Goodluck 50-8, Persaud 49-7, R. Fields 48-8, Blair 48-7, D. Fields 48-6, Duguid 48-5, Sampson 44-3 and Slowe 44-2.

‘O’ Class: Stuart 46-4, Deane 42-2, Loncke 39-1 and Persaud 26-2.

Competition resumes at 10:00 hours today with action at the 500, 600 and 1000 yards ranges.

The championships form part of the local rifle shooters preparation for the upcoming Caribbean Rifle Shooting championships next month in Trinidad and Tobago where the Guyanese will be defending the regional short range title.
