…Denzel Duff topples Caribbean’s best

Defending overall champions Guyana did not replicate its impressive form in this year’s Caribbean Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships presently on at the Marriott Dome in St Kitts and was upturned by Puerto Rico in the boys under 15 and 18 categories.

According to reports reaching Stabroek Sports out of St Kitts, Guyana fell 3-0 to the Puerto Ricans in the boys under 15 championships and the islanders also won the boys under 18 title as well.

Guyana who defeated rivals, Trinidad and Tobago, 3-0 in the semi-finals, saw Denzel Duff emerging as the player of the day when he defeated Jamaica’s number one player Mark Phillips 3-0 and Trinidad’s number one player Meshach Pillai in similar fashion, but his exploits failed to help Team Guyana in the finals.

The 18 years and under boys experienced three defeats to Curacao 3-2, Jamaica 3-1 and Puerto Rico 3-0, and only won against St Kitts and Nevis.

They were down to face Trinidad for fourth place last evening as well as participate in the mixed doubles, boy’s doubles and the girl’s doubles in both categories, 15 years and 18 years & under. Guyana opened the tournament in resolute fashion even though they lost to Puerto Rico in the Girls under 15 title. Local star racket wielder Trenace Lowe is continuing her riveting form as it was reported that she had qualified for the girls under 18 singles finals but up to last evening the result was not known.

The Land of Many Waters is one of the dominant forces in the international event, which also features, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Grenada, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Curacao and host St Kitts and Nevis. (Rawle Toney)
