Rajasthan in super over win
DURBAN, (Reuters) – AB de Villiers blasted the first century of the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to lead the Delhi Daredevils to a nine-run victory over the Chennai Super Kings at Kingsmead in Durban yesterday.
De Villiers struck an unbeaten 105 off just 54 balls, including five fours and six sixes, as Delhi posted 189 for five in their 20 overs before holding Chennai to 180 for nine.
The second match featured less destructive hitting but a more exciting finish, with the Rajasthan Royals beating the Kolkata Knight Riders on a super over at Newlands in Cape Town.
Rajasthan batted first and scored 150 for six, before Kolkata tied the score for the loss of eight wickets.
Kolkata had the first super over, and their total of 15 for one was easily surpassed by Rajasthan, with Yusuf Pathan hitting two sixes in three balls before thrashing a four through midwicket to seal the win.
De Villiers batted with that sort of freedom throughout in Durban, his second 50 coming off a mere 16 balls.
His stand of 68 off 39 balls with Tillakaratne Dilshan got Delhi out of trouble after they had been reduced to eight for two in two overs.
De Villiers and Manoj Tiwary then put on 74 from 35 balls for the fifth wicket.
Chennai got close to overhauling the total thanks to 57 off 27 balls from Matthew Hayden and 41 off 27 balls from Suresh Raina.
They needed 24 from the final two overs but three run-outs and a wicket from left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori ended the Chennai challenge.
Rajasthan had been put into bat by Kolkata in Cape Town and they owed their total of 150 to 42 off 21 balls from Pathan.
Kolkata’s reply was led by Chris Gayle, who smashed 41 off 33 balls before Sourav Ganguly carved 46 off 30 balls.
The 18-year-old Kamran Khan belied his lack of experience as he captured three for 18 off four overs and then returned to bowl a nerveless super over that ultimately set up victory.
