Windwards batsmen show form in practice match

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Test opener Devon Smith led three batsmen getting half centuries for the Windward Islands Monday against a UWI XI as they dominated a two-day practice match for the West Indies first-class season starting later this week.

Replying to the UWI’s total of 175 at the 3Ws Oval, the Windwards compiled 342 all out with Smith getting 62.

Wicket-keeper Lyndon James also scored 62 and rookie Keddy Lesporis top-scored with 63 as the Windwards easily secured a huge first innings advantage after starting the day on 69 for one.

Liam Sebastien stroked 23 while the young Jamaican all-rounder Nkrumah Bonner was the UWI XI’s standout bowler, claiming six for 84 with his leg-spin.

On Sunday, the new Windward Islands captain Darren Sammy had rocked the home team’s batting with his medium pace, taking four for eight off 8.3 overs. Pacer Nelon Pascal supported with two for 32.

Sammy lamented the team’s sparse preparation – only three days together in Barbados – before travelling Tuesday to Jamaica for their opening WICB Regional 4-Day game against the host country starting Friday.
