The woman, of East Indian descent, was discovered on Sunday morning on a dam aback the West Coast Demerara village, near a rice field. There were stab wounds about her body.
The discovery was made around 9am and police in a statement later announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the woman. The woman was described as between the ages of 25 and 30, of fair complexion, approximately 5’6” in height, medium built and with long black hair. Her body was found clad in a blue ¾ pants, a white top, blue and white brassiere and a pair of brown slippers. Her body remains at the West Demerara Hospital morgue.
Harlem residents told Stabroek News on Sunday that there was an incident, involving the taxi driver, which occurred Sunday morning and may be related to the discovery.
They said the taxi driver informed his relatives that he was robbed and had his vehicle hijacked in the early hours of Sunday morning and he arrived home intoxicated with his clothes muddied. His car was found abandoned at Canal Number Two after residents in the area observed the vehicle and contacted the taxi service base.
The taxi driver was among several other persons from Harlem taken in police custody for questioning in connection with the discovery of the woman’s body. Stabroek News could not ascertain whether the other persons are still in custody. But when contacted last evening, the taxi driver’s relatives informed this newspaper that the man was yet to be released.
