Easter tournament offers first international chess exposure in a long time

During the Easter weekend, the Bank of Guyana will be hosting the 8th Intra-regional Central Bank Games in Georgetown, and chess is one of the disciplines to be featured. The participating countries for the games are the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and the Eastern Caribbean countries.

One grand chess tournament is being planned for the Easter weekend by the Bank of Guyana that will feature all the participating countries. In a sense, the tournament will represent Guyana’s first taste of international chess competition for well over two decades. This is significant.

No one knows the strength of those players who will be representing their respective countries, but for the Bank/ Guyana to do well, our small group of representatives should contemplate some measured and calculated training before the big event. The Guyana Chess Federation is willing to lend some expertise for the preparation of our players, and may host a tournament for our competitors just before Easter.
Perhaps the Bank’s representatives may wish to compete in the federation’s January chess tournament which begins next Saturday and concludes the following weekend. This January tournament is being sponsored by the Trophy Stall.

The Trophy Stall Chess Tournament is an eight-round swiss for both junior and senior chess players and runs over two weekends. A full house is expected featuring the junior and senior national champions.
